Anyone that has been a victim of a Hurricane, tornado or other disaster such as a fire can tell you there are very few things that compare to losing all of the personal items you have worked your whole life for.

There are some things that you will never be able to replace, such as photos, family heirlooms, etc. but for the things that are covered under your homeowners insurance policy the replacement of all of these items is totally up to you. You are responsible for providing your insurance company with an inventory list of all the items that were destroyed whether it be from flood, fire, tornado, theft or hurricane.

Insurance adjusters can spend 10 hours a day 6 days a week for as long as a year working with homeowners trying to sort out their personal property loss. So ask yourself this question, “If your home was destroyed tomorrow, could you provide a list of every item in your home, that means the make, model, serial number, quantity, age and cost to replace them?”

You could provide a list of all the large items, couches, chairs, tables, beds, etc. But what about all the little items which add up to big dollars to replace them. If you don't claim it, they won't pay for it.

Do you have a video of the interior and exterior of your home or copies of all the personal documents, birth certificates, etc? If you have ever had to replace any major document which has been, lost, destroyed or stolen, you know what a hassle it can be. The more information you can give the insurance company the easier, faster and more accurately your claim can be settled.

With some insurance companies you are given the option to allow the insurance company to use their replacement service to replace the items for you or they will pay you for the item and you replace yourself. Though the replacement service sounds real good on the surface, many times it becomes a nightmare.

When you file a personal property damage claim the insurance adjuster will hand you a paper form to fill out with the make, model, serial number, where you bought the item, when you bought it and the cost.

NOTE: Things to remember: The insurance company depreciates the item at a rate they specify and when you provide the cost of the item make sure you indicate what it will cost to replace the item at TODAY'S prices, not what you paid for it. Keeping an up-to-date inventory of your personal property is critical to insuring that you will have the money to replace all the items you have lost.
